5th ANZ Modular Forum - Part 2 Highlights
On Friday (28/2/20) I again joined some peers and experts to better understand the current and future state of Modular Construction & Pre-Fabrication for my second day at the 5th ANZ Modular Construction and Pre-Fabrication Forum http://claridenglobal.com/conference/anz--modcon/
Some quick highlights:
@Georgios Anagnosto - ensuring the front-loaded investment in design to support the successful adoption of mass timber & dealing with the client and consumer's perceptions and acceptability of using mass timber.
@Jonathan Evans - the (new) Timber Age, ability to establish a kit of parts to support manufacture and installation, and the need to educate the broader connections to the industry Eg Leasing Agents to understand timber buildings.
@Simon Lincoln - reminding us of OnePanet and then showed us the ePod, the origami-inspired kiosk (I want one) and The Link at Chadstone.
@Dennis Butler - on crossing the chasm from early adopters to the majority, for the takeup of modular construction. Changing the common question to be;
'What is the benefit of insitu?'
@Stephen Sainsbury - stepped us through ecoshelta installations and how aluminum is an (unlikely) environmentally sustainable product.
@Prof Vivian Tam & Dr Ana Evangelista outlined some of the current challenges in the take-up of modular (manufacturing techniques and supply chain as well as education and skills) and also introduced Carbonated recycled concrete.
@Kate Nason - stepped us through some of her findings from a research tour to Europe and US on Passive House methodology. The learnings from Brussels of the need to re-train how to detail for passive success.
@Steve Jones - on how modular enabled the building of 466 Collins House Australia slimmest and the world's 3rd slimmest residential tower. And of note, how the local council responded during the works to enable more deliveries of modules having realised the less overall impact on traffic than traditional tower construction.
@Hans Brahim stepped us through lean and its application in tunnel pavements.
@Prof Marton Marosszeky - needing Energised, invigorated, agile Lean-quality supply chain. The success of co-reliance (how did my task or effort impact on those following) and a really good question of why do we continue to accept the repetition of errors (defects etc).
@Peter McUtchen introduced the prefabricated carpark solution of PARKD. Great opportunities here in increasing parking for commuters, hospitals etc.
@Matt Daly & Anthony Nolan - modular construction for social housing… not because it is perceived as cheap, but because it can provide the value and quality required to achieve passive house solutions to social housing.
@Alison Scotland - had the task of the last speaker on a Friday…. And did a stellar job of firing me up on how Standards Australia can help innovation and adoption and the need for our industry to engage to support this.
So after two days of learning and developing new questions, I'm further fired up to see our industry continue to respond, not only to improve our impact on the environment but to protect the future of the industry by evolving.
